A Talent for Murder: An Unconventional Thriller Exploring the Dark World of Patricia Highsmith, in Cinemas from October 30
Helen Mirren stars as the celebrated crime novelist in Anton Corbijn’s new thriller, alongside Alden Ehrenreich, Olivia Cooke, Juliet Stevenson and James Faulkner.
Opening in Romanian cinemas on October 30, 2026, A Talent for Murder invites audiences into a tense, unsettling story where psychological games, literary imagination and the blurred boundaries between fiction and reality collide.
Directed by Anton Corbijn, the film centres on Patricia Highsmith, the acclaimed American novelist best known for her psychological thrillers and the iconic character Tom Ripley.
Played by Helen Mirren, Highsmith is portrayed during a secluded period of her life, living in the Swiss Alps and keeping her distance from a literary world that still hopes to draw on her extraordinary talent.
Her solitude is interrupted by the arrival of Edward Ridgeway (Alden Ehrenreich), a young representative of a New York publishing house who has been sent to persuade her to write one final instalment of the famous Ripley series.
Their encounter soon takes an unexpected turn when Highsmith challenges Edward to help her devise the perfect murder. What begins as a professional visit gradually develops into a dangerous psychological game in which motives become increasingly difficult to read.
Built around suspense, manipulation and a battle of wits, the film explores the unsettling space between an author's imagination and the world beyond the page. As the characters become entangled in Highsmith's dark creative universe, the distinction between an invented scenario and a real threat begins to dissolve.
The cast also features Olivia Cooke, Juliet Stevenson and James Faulkner. The screenplay is written by Joanna Murray-Smith and draws on her stage play Switzerland, transforming its exploration of Highsmith's literary legacy and complex personality into a cinematic thriller.
With A Talent for Murder, Corbijn crafts an atmospheric, character-driven story about the power of imagination and the fascination of a mind capable of turning murder into a literary exercise.
The film offers an unconventional perspective on one of the most enigmatic figures in crime fiction, bringing audiences into a world where every conversation may conceal a threat and every idea may have consequences.
A Talent for Murder opens in cinemas across Romania on October 30, 2026 and in Hungarian cinema next year, on February 4, 2027.
