The Housemaid - From Page to Screen: Paul Feig Brings Freida McFadden’s Bestseller to Life

The Housemaid is an upcoming American psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, inspired by the first volume of the acclaimed book series written by Freida McFadden.

This series, which quickly became an international phenomenon, consists of the novels The Housemaid (2022), The Housemaid’s Secret (2023), The Housemaid Is Watching (2024), and an additional novella, The Housemaid’s Wedding (2024).

Each book delves deeper into the characters’ destinies, gradually revealing a world marked by secrets, manipulation, and psychological tension.

The first volume, on which the film is based, tells the story of Millie, a young woman with a troubled past who wants to start over. She accepts a job as a housemaid for a wealthy family, and at first everything seems like the perfect opportunity: a safe place to live, a steady income, and the hope of a new beginning.

However, as the days go by, Millie realizes that the elegance and good manners of the Winchester family hide dark truths. Strange behavior, strict rules, and unpredictable reactions turn the ideal job into a psychological nightmare.

The sequels — The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching — expand the universe created by the author and explore the consequences of Millie’s choices, introducing new characters, new conflicts, and new secrets.

In each volume, the author maintains suspense through unexpected twists and by emphasizing the social tensions between the privileged and the vulnerable.

The novella The Housemaid’s Wedding offers fans additional insight into the characters’ lives, rounding out the story on an emotional note.

The film adaptation promises to capture the essence of the original novel. Sydney Sweeney masterfully portrays Millie, bringing to life the character’s fragility, courage, and inner turmoil.

The cast also includes Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, who contribute to the intensity and complexity of the story.

Filming, which took place in New Jersey between January and March 2025, highlights the contrast between the apparent luxury of the Winchester family and the dark reality hidden behind closed doors.

The Housemaid is shaping up to be a gripping adaptation that preserves the tense atmosphere of the novels. Themes of manipulation, deceptive appearances, and psychological fragility are present in both the books and the film, illustrating that a perfect world is not always what it seems.

The book series complements the film, offering a broader and deeper perspective on Millie’s story, making The Housemaid a complex experience—both literary and cinematic.

The novels are available in Romania at Bookzone Publishing House.

The Housemaid will premiere in Romanian cinemas on January 2, 2026.

Prorom also will release The Housemaid in: Slovakia (on December 25, 2025), Bulgaria (on December 26, 2025), Hungary (on January 8, 2026) and Czech Republic (on January 15, 2026).

Roofman Romances TIFF 2025 Critics!

Critics at the Toronto International Film Festival are raving about the incredible true story of Roofman

Here are some of them:

DEADLINE, Pete Hammond:

“Channing Tatum & Kirsten Dunst Triumph In Incredible Real-Life Story That Becomes One Of 2025’s Best Movies”
“It is the role of a lifetime for Tatum, who delivers a performance of charm and complexity playing an exceptionally smart and inventive veteran being tossed aside now… This is a perfect role for Tatum, who most recently charmed in Dog and The Lost City, both proving his box office prowess. Here he takes it to new levels playing a flawed and complicated man, in real trouble, but one we root for no matter what. It is one of those roles where after you see it you cannot imagine another actor doing it as well.”

“(Dunst) is an actress who seems incapable of a false note, and she and Tatum have the magic, a chemistry you can’t fake that makes this impossible situation all the more heartbreaking.”

VARIETY, Peter Debruge:

“It’s the through-the-roof chemistry between the two leads that makes the film worthy of repeat viewing. Tatum affected swagger has eased into a natural confidence, while Dunst brings just the right amount of wariness to a woman who’s devoted to her kids and devout in her faith.”

THE WRAP, Steve Pond:

“It’s easier to shrug off that string of felonies if the felon is played by the effortlessly charming Tatum, who somehow gets us to believe he’s just a little misguided.”

“Roofman” has it both ways; it’s funny and foreboding, sweet and troubling, light on its feet but with an inescapable undertone of uneasiness, even dread.”

VARIETY, Brent Lang:

“Indeed, “Roofman” toggles between showing the joy of Manchester’s heists, as well as the tragic consequences of his criminality, allowing Tatum and Dunst to chart expansive emotional arcs in performances that are sure to be talked about throughout awards season.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Scott Feinberg:

“a career-best turn from Tatum, who hasn’t had a showcase of this quality since 2014’s Foxcatcher, and who makes a strong case for a best actor Oscar nomination, which would be his first-ever recognition from the Academy. Dunst, too, is worthy of a serious look in the best supporting actress Oscar contest, in which she was previously nominated for 2021’s The Power of the Dog.”

MR. WILL WONG, Nicholas Proteous:

“Roofman succeeds as a comedy, a romance, a moving story of found family, and an unpredictable crime saga. It’s a brilliant and surprising genre mashup for Cianfrance, and a worthy addition to your list of must-sees at this year’s Festival.”

“Tatum, as Jeffrey Manchester, is one of the most entertaining characters in recent memory.”

THE TORONTO SUN, Mark Daniell:

“‘Roofman’ is the type of movie that people who enjoy a night out at the cinema are really going to dig. Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst looked like they had a ball making this. Heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time — this is the perfect fall movie.”

NEXT BEST PICTURE, Ema Sasic:

“ROOFMAN plays into all of Channing Tatum’s strengths: His charm, comedy chops, athleticism and sincere on-screen presence. Once Kirsten Dunst enters the picture, Derek Cianfrance hits us with another romance that builds lovingly, until hard truths hit hard in the end”

IN SESSION FILM, Shadan Larki:

“Channing Tatum is the best he's ever been in ROOFMAN. This feels like the performance he's been waiting to give his whole career.”

Prorom is releasing Roofman in Romania (on October 10), Bulgaria (October 10), Hungary (on November 27) and Czech Republic & Slovakia (on October 9).

The Ritual: Al Pacino & Dan Stevens in the True Horror Story That Inspired The Exorcist

The Ritual is a horror film directed by David Midell, starring Al Pacino and Dan Stevens.

The film is based on the true story of the exorcism of Emma Schmidt, an American woman who was allegedly possessed by a demonic entity.

The plot revolves around two priests, Theophilus Riesinger (Al Pacino) and Joseph Steiger (Dan Stevens), who must overcome their differences and work together to perform a series of dangerous exorcisms on Emma to save her soul.

The Ritual is inspired by the 1935 book Begone Satan!, which has been at the center of faith-based debate for nearly a century. The original account of the events went on to inspire The Exorcist book and William Friedkin’s famed 1973 film.

The Ritual is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

Ashley Greene, Patricia Heaton, Abigail Cowen and Ritchie Montgomery also star in director David Midell's feature that hits theaters this month.

Prorom is releasing The Ritual in Romania (on May 30), Bulgaria (June 6), Hungary (on July 3) and Czech Republic & Slovakia (on July 10).

Borderlands is now in cinemas!

Borderlands - one of the most anticipated films of the summer is in cinemas today!

Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, this action-adventure-comedy follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous treasure hunter with a mysterious past, who reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B.

She forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits ― Roland (Kevin Hart), once a highly respected soldier, but now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Dr. Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot.

These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands ― but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

Long before producing the film, Ari Arad, whose credits include the recent hit Uncharted, had enjoyed playing the game upon which it’s based, calling it “cool and weird, and one of the more exciting and emotional games I’ve experienced. The game is action-packed but there’s a sweetness to it, which I thought was unique.”

Another key figure in Tiny Tina’s life is her stalwart, hulking, and loyal bodyguard Krieg. “It’s a bizarre relationship,” says Roth, “because both Tiny Tina and Krieg have been discarded. They are two misfits who take care of one another; there’s love and acceptance between them, in a big brother-little sister type way. Tiny Tina can take care of Krieg when he needs it, and he can and will kill anyone to protect her. The film is very much about the family you choose; within that family you learn to sacrifice and that’s when you are at your strongest.”

“The difference between Krieg and all the other Psychos is the soft spot in his heart he has for Tiny Tina,” says Florian Munteanu, who is best known for portraying fearsome boxer Viktor Drago in Creed II and Creed III.

According to Roth, it’s a perfect fit between actor and role.Florian grounds Krieg in a way I didn’t know was possible. He brings real humanity and multiple layers to a character that on the surface seems totally insane and savage.”

Principal photography took place in Budapest, where the BORDERLANDS art direction teams, led by production designer Andrew Menzies, constructed Pandora from Hungary’s unique geological features and from inside Budapest’s formidable sound stages.

There, they brought to life Pandora’s mix of the wild American West, humor, and an epic fantasy space adventure.

Budapest provided impressive otherworldly locations, heightened by director of photography Rogier Stoffers’s striking cinematography, including rock quarries, mines, and underground tunnels.

Production also took over the whole of Stern Studios. “I love that we got to invent everything,” comments Roth. “It’s a lawless world, where everyone is figuring out how to just survive.”

Award-winning filmmaker Eli Roth made his directorial debut in 2002 with the hugely successful film Cabin Fever, and his follow-up titles – Hostel, Hostel Part II, Knock Knock, and Death Wish – have earned him critical praise and a reputation as a true innovator in the horror space.

Prorom distributes Borderlands in Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
